Air conditioning is a big ask for a battery
After space heaters, air conditioners are the hardest appliance to run on battery power. A window unit's compressor draws 400–850 W while running and cycles on and off as the room cools. In a heat wave, with the sun on the windows, it may run almost continuously, so expect the shorter end of the ranges below.
Startup surge: the reason AC units trip power stations
A conventional window AC can pull 2–3× its running watts for a moment when the compressor starts. A 5,000 BTU unit may spike to around 1,200 W. That's fine for stations rated 1,500 W and up, but too much for most 300–800 W models.
- Inverter ACs (variable speed) start gently, use less power once the room is cool and are much friendlier to batteries. If you're buying an AC for outage use, buy an inverter model.
- Soft-start kits can cut the surge of a regular AC. They're common in RVs. Installing one may affect the warranty.
- Start the AC on its own, before switching on other big loads.
Getting more cooling from the same battery
- Cool one small room, and keep its door closed.
- Set the thermostat to 78°F (26°C) or higher. Each degree lower costs runtime.
- Close blinds on sun-facing windows.
- Use fans instead when you can. A box fan at about 60 W runs about 6× longer than even a small AC.
- Daytime solar matches AC demand well. Check what your panels add with the solar recharge calculator.
